Get up close and personal

Kārearea Encounters

Our Kārearea Encounters for 2026 will take place between February and May. Dates, pricing, and timings are currently under review and will be updated soon.

The Kārearea Encounter offers a unique opportunity to get up close with New Zealand’s magnificent endemic falcon: the kārearea! You'll enjoy an intimate, one-hour experience in a small private group setting, guided by a knowledgeable member of our team.

Your encounter includes an engaging educational talk about kārearea and the conservation work we carry out at the Trust, a behind-the-scenes tour of our aviaries, and the chance to meet one of our Advocacy kārearea up close while wearing a falconry glove. Experience the unforgettable moment of a kārearea landing on your hand, seeing every detail of this incredible raptor up-close.

Please note: all interactions with our Advocacy kārearea are entirely on their terms. Participation is always dependent on the individual bird’s health, wellbeing, and willingness on the day. We are committed to respectful, positive, and choice-led experiences that prioritise the welfare of our birds above all else.
