Pukatea

FEMALE | Arrived 2025

  • Pukatea was spotted at Whites Bay by Sarah Pearson, 5pm on Saturday night, while she was training with a LandSAR group. Pukatea appeared injured and was seen hopping around the driftwood pile outside the Surf Lifesaving building. Later, she was observed perching on the steps as dusk fell.

When KFT Manager Holly Turner arrived to rescue her, a feral cat ran out from beneath the steps where Pukatea had taken shelter. She was very cold, wet, and severely underweight, with blood and cuts across her face and a broken left wing.

Pukatea was also suffering from a trichomoniasis infection known as “frounce.” This parasitic disease had caused large white masses to grow in her mouth, making it impossible for her to swallow food without assistance. She underwent intensive rehabilitation and made a remarkable recovery. However, despite the best efforts, the damage to her wing was beyond repair.

She was named Pukatea by the LandSAR group, in honor of the rohe (area) she came from. Pukatea will join our Restoration Breeding Programme and receive long-term care.
